Ostasteidn

Mountains
National Tourist Route

On the west side of Sandsfjord Bridge, just after Sandsfjord Bridge, you will find the spectacular rest area and viewpoint called Ostasteidn, which is part of the National Tourist Route Ryfylke.

In the center of the area stands the weathered stone, Ostasteidn, which over time will be covered in moss. You will also find two great viewpoints, several seating areas, toilets, and fantastic views of Sandsfjord and the surrounding fjord landscape. The area is wheelchair accessible.

Ostasteidn is inspired by the paintings of Lars Hertervig, who often drew inspiration from the nature in Ryfylke in his works. The atmospheric mood in Hertervig's paintings is reflected in the architecture, from his early heavy and gloomy oil paintings to his later and brighter watercolors. Hertervig's unique use of light and dreamlike landscapes also leave their mark on the stop.

The area was designed by the architectural firm KAP. In 2019, they won the Concrete Element Prize for their work on Ostasteidn. Read more about the prize  here.

Easily accessible: The rest area is designed according to the principles of universal design. The paths are wide and on a slightly soft flat surface.
